Maui

"The Valley Isle"

Quick Facts

Maui, the Valley Isle was formed by two volcano's, mighty Haleakala and the West Maui mountains. Haleakala is the largest dormant volcano in the world. It last erupted 213 years ago (1790, the same year that King Kamehameaha attacked Maui to reunite the Hawaiian islands under one King) on the southeast side of the island. Its crater is large enough to fit the whole of Manhattan Island inside. Its moon-like surface was used by the Apollo 11 astronauts as a practice site before they landed on the moon. On its West slope, you will find the one of the world's steepest roads, which rises from sea level to 10,023 feet in just over 37 miles. The West Maui mountains are the second wettest spot in the world at 400 inches of rain per year. The first being on the island of Kauai at almost 431 inches per year! There are approximately 135,000 residents (2006).  Maui was voted eight years in a row "as the BEST Island in the World"!

Besides tourism, which is the largest industry by far, Maui also has a large sugar and pineapple industry. In fact, Maui is now the only island in Hawaii that grows sugar and pineapples on a large scale.

Maui, the Valley Isle.

The Hawaiian islands span over 1600 miles of the Pacific ocean, stretching from the Kure Atoll in the northwest to the still underwater island of Lo'ihi off the southeast coast of the Big Island. Each island was formed as the Pacific plate crossed over a hot spot below the crust. The plate continues to move across the hot spot. Currently, the Big Island is passing over this spot and so the island chain continues to grow.

Maui is the second largest island in the Hawaiian chain. It was formed 2 million years ago by two volcano's and their respective lava flows, the west Maui mountains, 5,800 feet amsl, and the formidable Haleakala, 10,023 feet amsl, the world's largest, dormant volcano. The county of Maui includes the islands of Lanai, Molokai, and Kahoolawe.

Once known for its sugar, pineapple and whaling industry, Maui is now a vacationers' paradise with lush green vegetation, golden beaches, windsurfing, and world class hotels. This makes Maui one of the world's most popular island. The year round population of Maui is 135,000 people, increasing to 300,000 when including visitors. The only practical way to travel in and around the islands is by air. Maui has three airports; Kahului, being the main airport, Kapalua, on the West end and beautiful Hana on the Northeast coastline.
